October 3rd, the day “Swifties” had been anticipating for months. The day Taylor Swift released her newest album, “The Life of a Showgirl”. And in the process, broke the internet. Day one “Swifties” are finally breaking up, while she’s simultaneously attracting new fans and keeping old ones. Let’s talk about it.
Swift is known for the varying genres and styles she’s explored throughout her nearly twenty-year career. Country, Folk, Pop…if you can name it, she probably has an album in that genre. This is part of the reason her following is so huge, there is something for everyone. And now, a big divide between the “Swifties”, has begun; fans who adore the album and fans who call it “lazy and cringey.” Students at Davis have their own thoughts.
“Taylor’s new album is really one of my favorites by far you can really tell how hard she worked to make it a good album.” One student said
“Eldest daughter is my favorite track; I can really relate to that one.” Another student said when I asked her what her favorite track was. However, not all opinions on the new album were positive.
“It’s so cringy and really is the downfall of Taylor’s lyrics,” a student said. And of course, people on the internet have a similar opinion. Full length videos have been made criticizing Swift’s lyrics and word choice. So, what is it about these lyrics that people hate?
There are twelve tracks on this Album: The Fate of Ophelia, Elizabeth Taylor, Opalite, Father Figure, Eldest Daughter, Ruin the Friendship, Actually Romantic, Wi$H Li$T, Wood, CANCELLED!, Honey, and The Life of a Showgirl (feat. Sabrina Carpenter). One of her most hated lyrics comes from “Actually Romantic.” Taylor sings, “Like a toy chihuahua barking at me from a tiny purse, that’s how much it hurts.” As…endearing…as this line is I must admit it is on the cheesier side.
Taylor has been known for her heart piercing lyrics, and many fans are dissatisfied with the product she has produced. “The Life of a Showgirl” is a more pop focused album unlike her last album “The Tortured Poets Department”, which was more lyric focused like poetry as the album name suggests. However, many fans also didn’t love her last album, also calling her lyrics cringy. Other fans absolutely loved this album as well as her newest.
Many are calling “The Life of a Showgirl” a mix between her “Midnights” album and “1989” which are two of her most popular works.
Taylor Swift is one of the most loved (and hated) singers of all time. Regardless of opinions, she has paved the way for new artists and broken records which no one thought possible. And this album is just the start.
