In the United States you hear about the two main political parties in American democracy. The republicans and the democrats but why do we have these different parties and how does having multiple political parties important in American democracy. In the United States us as people have many different opinions and where we stand on certain topics in politics. These parties are here to help people decide what party they should join or which win best aligns with their political beliefs. Here we will talk about the history of these political parties and where they cam from, to the importance of these parties today in our society.
To start with we need to know when these parties started and the history behind them. The first party that was founded was the democratic party in 1828. It became the sole dominant party after the war of 1812. The democratic party was founded by Andrew Jackson, and Matin Van Buren. In the 1828 was one of the most crucial elections as it was the first election to see the start of the two-party system. The 1828 election was between Democrat Andrew Jackson and National Republican John Quincy Adams. Where Andrew Jackson won the election and became president. In the early times of the Democratic party, they stood for a simple, frugal, and unintrusive government. They were against government spending and government favoritism. (Mainly in corporate characters) The democratic party pioneered in in party organization and discipline. The Democratic party when founded became a strong organized party that was strong and helped form modern day politics today like how we do elections now and how to candidate system works. However, the Democratic party isn’t the only party how bout the Republican party how did they come about and how are they important in American democracy.
The Republican party was founded in 1854, by anti-slave activists that were against the Kansas-Nebraska act; and the expansion of slavery into more U.S territories. The party main political founders that helped boost the rapid growth of the Republican party were. Abraham Lincoln, Whig Party, Henry Jarvis Raymond, Horace Greeley, Francis Preston Blair, and Alvan E. Bovay. All this people were important in helping shape the Republican party. The Republican party was the Democratic party’s main rival and still is today. With the founding of the Republican party, they had a slogan which said what they stood for and what they wanted in America, and it read “Free soil, free labor, free speech, free men.” The slogan showed what the Republican party was about and what they stood for. In 1856 the Republican party had their first ever candidate run for president and that was John C. Freemont. Though he did not win the election his running was a starting point for the Republican party in American democracy and presidential elections. In 1860, the Republican party established themselves as a major political party with the election of President Abraham Lincoln. Who was one of the greatest presidents we ever had. The Republican party was seen as freedom Fighters and fought for free speech and individual right. But how are these parties important in politics today.
In the United States we still have the democratic and Republican party however things have changed overtime. Today their views or the same and different from what they used to be. The republican party today stands for securing the border and help protect traditional American values and lower taxes etc. The Democratic Party today stands for emphasizing social equality and equal opportunity and supporting voting rights and minority rights etc. However, despite the differences in these parties they do share some similarities like both wanting to help strengthen our economy and help grow our countries’ education and healthcare. We can see that these parties have different views and some that are the same, but it is important that we keep these parties as they are important in showing different opinions and giving different views from people of both parties on what we should do with our country. In our country it’s vital that we share our differences in politics, that is what these parties are for helping us know what party we belong in and even if you are not sure which party is right for you. Now you know what the parties stand for and what their purposes are in American democracy.
In conclusion these two parties are important in shaping American democracy as we know today. No matter what party you are from, it’s important that we share our thoughts and opinions on politics and that we accept our differences and that we can all get along. So that both parties can continue helping in American democracy and that we can all be nice and respect other people’s political viewpoints and opinions. And help continue to make our Country great.
