There is one question that has been circulating around Davis County for years: what really is beneath Davis High School? Rumors have been spread throughout all Davis County. World War II bomb shelters? Underground tunnels that connect to city hall? Nuclear fallout shelters? Underground pools?
The “legend” that has trumped all these rumors is the belief that there are underground tunnels beneath the road that connect the high school and junior high which sit across the street. Kaysville junior high was built in 1960 while Davis High, originally called Davis County High School, was built in 1914. Students at both Davis High school and Kaysville junior high school have often played the game of trying to find the entrance for the tunnels. Is it in the “cage”? Behind the bleachers?
So many rumors have circled around the student body of every generation, and it is about high time the truth was revealed. I sat down with Dr. Hawthorne, Mr. Peterson, and Mrs. Jackson to finally learn what really lurks beneath the school. Our amazing administrators were more than happy to help.
Mr. Peterson took the lead in this interview, first explaining his time at both Kaysville Junior High and Davis High. Mrs. Jackson also offered additional helpful information as she was a student at Davis High herself. The first question I asked was of course the obvious one, are there really tunnels beneath Davis High? And the answer was slightly disappointing to say the least, but at least the truth is out. There are no “tunnels” beneath Davis, and we have reason to believe there never was. However, there is something beneath Kaysville Junior High: a bomb shelter of sorts.
Over time, the story of this bomb shelter slowly turned into the legend that there are tunnels under the street. Sadly, this is not true. Kaysville Junior high has been added onto and remodeled but the original building still stands. After hearing this, my next question was of course what is down there in that bomb shelter and who has access? Mr. Peterson informed me that there is not much beneath the school besides pipes. Since the school is older, most of the pipes, heating, plumbing and such are beneath the school rather than above ground like at modern Davis High.
As for who has access, not very many people. Mainly Maintenace people and the administration. On occasion, a few students have found a way into these tunnels…which has scared teachers out of their minds to hear something behind the locked doors. Maybe these schools really are haunted…but that’s a story for another time.
