Reality television comes in many shapes and forms. Some channels focus on family and relationships while others focus on competitions and challenges of some kind. Throughout these shows, celebrities have engaged in surprises and other collaborations in efforts to enhance the series to a certain extent. So, which celebrities have made recent impacts on these kinds of entertainment? These are a few examples of twists and turns that have magnified different types of reality-based media.
The Olympics are a series of beloved sporting competions that have taken place over centuries since 776 B.C., when the ancient Greeks first made them popular. The first modern international games took place during April 1896, in Athens, Greece, with the most recent ones taking place during February 2026 in Milan, Italy. Snoop Dogg is a popular American rapper loved for his music, TV personality, coaching on the reality singing competition The Voice, and even for his own cookbook! In the 2024 Paris Olympics, NBC invited Snoop to attend as a guest supporting Team USA. After attending, he emphasized the highlights and other memorable moments of the games while rooting for American athletes! Snoop Dogg joined the 2026 Milan games as an honorary coach, and he’s even been nicknamed, “America’s Cheerleader”.
Survivor is a reality-competition game taking place on the South Pacific islands. Ranging from 29 days, a group of 16-20 contestants gather in separate tribes in the wilderness to compete in rigorous challenges for rewards, and immunity from the doomed Tribal Council. After challenges are completed, the losing team is sent to Tribal Council where one member of the group is voted off of the game. However, hidden around the island are advantages called idols. If a player finds an idol, they also have a chance for immunity against any votes cast against them if the idol is legitimate. Two seasons of the show are filmed per year; and after premiering in May of 2000, Survivor is currently on its 50th season! For this particular event, fans voted for their favorite past contestants to compete on Season 50. And to add more spice to the game, the production team reached out to GRAMMY award-winning singer-songwriter Billie Eilish to ask if she wanted to participate in a collaboration with the game show. Back in 2022, Billie released a song called “TV” where she referenced Survivor in her lyrics. As a fan of the gameshow, she accepted the offer and decided to take on a twist relating to idols. After choosing a boomerang tactic style, the official Billie Eilish Boomerang Idol was created. If a player in the game finds this idol, they must give it to another player of their choice. If the recipient is voted off the game with the idol still on them, it boomerangs back to original finder. Furthermore, the idol is valid only until there are only 5 contestants left in the game.
Since 2002 and 2003, The Bachelor and The Bacholorette have gained popularity for its romantic takes on reality TV. On a journey to find love, a bachelor or bachelorette is chosen every other year to date several different contestants until they find their match. At the end of most episodes, a Rose Ceremony takes place. With only a limited number of roses, the bachelor/bachelorette will hand out a single rose to the contestants that made the best impression on them. Whoever doesn’t receive a rose is eliminated from the show. The typical cast age range in these shows are younger contestants in their twenties and thirties. But in 2023, a special spin-off on the show called The Golden Bachelor aired on September 28th. Now in their golden years, contestants on the show range from their fifties to their seventies, often competing in hopes for a second chance at love. In every season of the Bachelor/Bachelorette franchise, all contestants stay in The Mansion. The mansion is an estate located in Agoura Hills, CA which houses the contestants during the reality show. The then 71-year-old Gerry Turner was the very first Golden Bachelor on Season 1 and stood in front of the mansion as he met each woman. But in a surprise twist, comedian and TV host Jimmy Kimmel got involved in the segment. Jimmy’s 84-year-old aunt Concetta Porenza, better known as “Aunt Chippy” greeted Gerry unexpectedly, and later fell asleep and took a nap on the mansion’s couch during the rose ceremony! Her appearance added a splash of comedy to the reality series’ very first episode.
Celebrities have engaged in some memorable collaborations and surprises on reality TV indeed. Snoop Dogg has become Team USA’s cheerleader in the Olympic games, Billie Eilish’s idol collaboration with Survivor changed the fates of current contestants, Jimmy Kimmel’s aunt surprised the first cast of The Golden Bachelor, and many more celebrities have made unique appearances on other forms of reality TV. Has there been a surprise a celebrity made on a TV series that you still remember?
