There are many reasons as to why someone might want to move out of state, but not many people will tell you how to do it, especially not explicitly with clear directions. The first time is always the most difficult and confusing. If moving out from the state you currently reside in is in your five-year plan, then this simple list might be a great jumping off point for you.
Planning
The first step is planning. This is what is going to take the longest, people can often take months or even years to just plan to move out of state.
The first thing you will want to do is figure out what you want to do career wise. This is a crucial step as you will need a job set up in the new area before you move. Having a job in mind and having the qualifications to get you hired will make the transition that much easier. This is what can take moving states years, the hours put in into learning a trade take time.
As you plan for your career, this is also a good time to start saving. We will need as much money as we can, not only to cover the cost of moving but also the cost of settling in. Any money you get you should try to save at least 20% but if you need to cut into some of that to continue pay for what you currently have too, do that. Debt is worse than not having savings.
The next step is landing said job in the place before you move. You need to learn the job prospects of the area and what jobs are needed and what might be overpopulated. The job market now-a-days is insanely competitive, while that is another conversation, it is not optimal to not have a job in a strange place. Thanks to the internet, online interviews and job applications are possible, the only catch is when you interview, you need to be upfront that you are moving in from a different spot.
You will also need to figure out housing. The financial and time cost is stark. Researching where you want to live, weighing the pros and cons from one complex to another, and figuring out roommates if need be, takes a hefty amount of time. You will most likely have to cover the first few months of rent plus any security deposit your landlord asks of you, on top of any prior rent you have left to pay.
Packing & Moving
Most people can attest to the struggle of packing everything up. It is time consuming and costly much like every other part of moving.
The physical packing takes up the most time. people advise that you should whittle down what you have as you are packing. Moving is a great time to declutter, especially since clutter makes it 1,000 times harder to move. It is also crucial that while you’re packing you pack the lease necessity items first of the course of a month or so and leave out the necessities until a few days prior.
Most people cannot fit all of their things into their car, which means they have to turn to their family and friends to help out or hire a moving company or rent a moving truck. This is what makes the actual move cost so much. Hiring a moving company can cost upwards of $3,500 for every 1,000 miles.
Once you are on the road, you need to buckle down for the long haul. You should keep basic hygiene, personal items, and select clothes with you in your own vehicle. This is the easiest way to get changed, bathe, and charge your devices without having to unpack everything to get to these items.
Settling In
Settling in is a fun part about moving. It is a new door to a brand new chapter in your life but it is time consuming.
You are finally in your new place and now it is time to unpack. You need to focus on essential zones like your bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. Your bed and clothes, kitchenware and food, and toiletries are the top priority currently. We need to assemble the frame and dress the mattress and unpack clothes and store them. We need store kitchen appliances and go grocery shopping for food and spices. Then we need to focus on soap, haircare, skincare, and other bathroom staples.
You should be able to start your job soon after your move, this will hopefully give you a community you can bleed into. It will also allow you to start making money that you can cut into instead of your savings. Because of this, you will be able to get comfortable with the area and start to go on outings to explore and try new things.
Moving away from home is strenuous and is different for everyone, this is just a basic guideline for this serious event in your life. Take these tips and run with them, you got this.
