Davis High School has been established for over a hundred years, however, the band and music programs at the school have only been around since the 1920s when the first choir and orchestras were created. Throughout the years, the Davis High Marching Band has set high standards throughout the state of Utah and has had several successes unmatched by other schools in Davis County.

Throughout the school’s history, the Davis Marching Band has managed to remain one of the top two most represented bands in the Utah All State Band and Orchestra. Encompassing over two hundred members, the band represents nearly a quarter of the entries at the North State Solo and Ensemble Festival.

“We have over 200 students in the band and it’s like one big family where everyone just comes together and works for one purpose” said Davis High junior, Kora Smith, as she explained the close relationships of band members which help them cooperate and succeed in a common goal.

In addition to its large number of members, the Marching Band at Davis has continuously succeeded in various competitions and festivals throughout the years. Through the clever leadership of band director, Steven Hendrix, band members learn how to transform their failures into making themselves better which eventually will lead them to victory. In the last 23 years, the band has received 22 superior ratings at the State Concert Band Festival along with being specifically mentioned by Senator Michael Lee on the U.S Senate floor.

“The hardest thing about marching band is having to deal with the disappointment sometimes” said Smith while explaining a circumstance in which the band performed very well in a competition, however, only received a 4th place ranking.

To this day, the Davis High Marching Band continues to impress and set standards of excellence throughout Davis County. Through several students receiving scholarships for college band programs and through the band’s prestige and overall success, the Davis Marching Band remains to be one of the many exceptional organizations at Davis High.

Davis High junior, Kimberly McKeen, regards her favorite aspect of marching band by saying, “it’s the idea of being with your best friends all day and working on this great masterpiece that you built together.”
