How Art Forms Have Changed Throughout the Years

How+Art+Forms+Have+Changed+Throughout+the+Years
There are many forms of art, some may say anything can be considered art if it is somethingthat was created with artistic purpose. Art was created more than 40,000 years ago. It has beensaid that the oldest pieces of art to ever be discovered were the Bhimbetka and Daraki-Chattancupoles. These are older than the cave art that was discovered, which led us to one of the mainart forms that had been found. A lot of cave art and things of the sort were created during thestone age, also known as the paleolithic era.The paleolithic period was the era of human development. The era of stone tools and furclothing. There was a lot of free time due to humans discovering things that we now know oftoday. During these discoveries, art was created. A site states, “Two main forms of paleolithicart are known to modern scholars: small sculptures; and monumental paintings, inciseddesigns, and reliefs on the wall of caves.” They started these art forms when discovering things, and found the enjoyment and the beauty of it, therefore we still have many art forms today. After the paleolithic era, art such as jewelry was introduced. This would be made by simplematerials such as shells, bones, and teeth. Back then, jewelry wasn’t used for purposes like it istoday. Today we use jewelry as an additional accessory to our looks, to feel a certain way aboutourselves, or even to be considered rich depending on the price or look of the jewelry beingworn. The purpose of jewelry back then was to be used for religious reasons or ceremonies thatwere being held.During the Neolithic period, which came after the paleolithic era, there were many newforms of art that were created. This period dealt with a lot of agriculture and animals, whichaided the people in making new things with new resources. These art forms were known asweaving, megaliths, and stylized pictographs. This era was a great gateway for the art that wasto come in the future time periods. It was the start of the early forms of writing, painting, andpottery.

Pottery was created for its uses, such as bowls and vases made to hold water. But they were
also created for decorative purposes. Theres many different shapes that can be created withpottery, and designs that can be added. It truly is a beautiful art form. Every pottery is differentfrom the other, making it incredibly unique.During medieval times, many paintings were being created for religious reasons. It was seenin Islamic, Christian, and Jewish religions. An article says, “This gave rise to medieval paintingsthat were mostly religious in nature and appeased the various gods that the artists wouldfollow.” During this time, there were also plenty of landscape paintings being made. Thesebecame incredibly popular because they represented beautiful landscapes around the world. This attracted more people, which led to more paintings being made. The Renaissance era took place after Medieval times, and it was a major era for art. This erabrought a new wave of history in paintings. Some artists from this era that are well-known areMichelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael. Their paintings are still looked at today! Theywere a big inspiration to other artists. They created different techniques that artists still usecurrently. A popular technique that was created was Sfumato. This was invented by da Vinci.Sfumato is the technique for softening the transition between colors. There were many techniques created in this time period that artists used to create famouspaintings. Some paintings that are still popular today are the ‘Mona Lisa’ (Leonardo da Vinci),‘Starry Night’ (Vincent van Gogh), and ‘Scream’ (Edvard Munch). These are all famous paintingsthat have deeper meanings behind them. Not only is art a concept of beauty, but it is also a way of expressing ourselves. We put timeand effort into something that may seem so small and simple to others, but in reality, it isspecial and meaningful to us. We can see the deeper meaning behind it and share it with othersin a simpler way. Sometimes words are hard to say, so people have a better time expressingtheir beliefs, opinions, and thoughts into art. This takes us into the art forms that have beenrecently made.Art now days is not just painting and pottery. There is so much more to it. The generaldefinition of art is, “The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination.” Thismeans that it can be anything as long as it takes creativity and imagination. Some forms of artthat aren’t usually considered are music, dancing, literature, architecture, photography, etc. Itdoesn’t have to be visual. It can be many things. Therefore, the late 19th century could also be seen as a time of artistic value. This was thetime of music and dance. It only grew and grew as time went on. In the 80’s, we saw a widerange of music genres, a popular one being disco. This became incredibly popular during thattime, making a different form of art popular.

A lot of the art we have today is the same as art was back then. Only we have more advanced
tools which help us advance further in our art forms. Everyone is different, which makes the artwe create so unique. We get inspiration from past artists and use it in our own art. Graffitibecame popular in the 60’s and it was inspired by the people thousands of years ago that wouldpaint on the walls of their cave. There will always be a repeat of art, although it may be createddifferently. Art has changed drastically throughout the years when it was first discovered, and itwill continue to change.Paleolithic Period – Art, Tools, Hunter-Gatherers | BritannicaThe History of Jewelry: From Ancient Times to Modern Day – HooShoutNeolithic Art and the New Stone Age (thoughtco.com)History of Painting: Evolution Of The Greatest Form Of Art (portraitflip.com)
