Cancel Culture

Cancel+Culture

Cancel culture is a new term or social norm that has recently been destroying famous personals career.  It is said to be started with the sexual crimes committed by people like Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein, and R.Kelly. The internet world has been deciding who deserves to be in the spotlight and who does not.

In the Pop Culture Dictionary, cancel culture is defined as:

“The popular practice of withdrawing support from public figures and companies after they have done or said something considered objectionable or offensive. Cancel Culture is generally discused as being performed on social media in the form of group shaming.”

The recent cancelation that has been brought into the light of social media is James Charles and David Dobrik. Both are famous for their popularity on YouTube. James is beauty guru. He does make up tutorials and is very talented. He is also famous on Tik Tok and hangs out with Dixie and Charli D’Amelio. David Dobrik is a part of the vlog squad; he makes funny prank videos.

James Charles is being canceled due to many underage boys coming forward with proof of inappropriate snapchat conversations. This is not the first time. Back in 2019 James was exposed by Tati Westbrook for many allegations of sexual harassment. He then came out with an apology video and has since been forgiven by the public eye. Two weeks ago James came out with another apology video “holding myself accountable”. He admits to all the rumors and blames it on his desperation.

David Dobrik is being canceled for many reasons, but the main reason is due to a vlog he made a while ago. In this vlog he captured under aged girls drinking. One of the girls came out and said that one of David’s buddies named Dom SAed her. David has come out with two apologies claiming he did not know what was happening and claims that he has learned and grow from this experience.

So, did these two deserve to be canceled?  Is the media telling us the truth about these people?
